BBC Seeking Wounded Warriors

Do you want to get involved in a fun and challenging project for British television? Can you give two British teenagers the chance to have some much-needed structure in their lives?

The British Broadcasting Corporation is looking for American parents with disabilities who have children aged 12-20 years to take part in the 4th season of its series on parenting.

We want to showcase a strong, loving family who are proud of their values, who believe in boundaries and bringing out the best in their kids.

In each one hour episode, two British teenagers will be sent to live with a family abroad to experience life in their culture and under their rule to see how their lives may be enriched and challenged.

We are excited to represent people with disabilities on a prime time UK T.V. show who are there because of their ability (being great parents) rather than their disability. We hope you do too and can’t wait hear from you.

If you interested or just want more info about the series. Email alexforeman@twentytwenty.tv or call Alex on 011 44 207 424 7739 and we will call you straight back. We are trying to find families asap so we would really love hear from you as soon as possible.

Team American Spirit Parade

The parade will take place on Saturday, April 30th. Step off is at 1:00 pm. The reviewing stand is on Buchanan Ave. and the Parade will end on Race Avenue. The parade is to honor the Veterans (Past, Present, & Future) and all First Responders (Police, Fire, & EMS).

Featured in the parade will be the 2nd Division United States Marine Corp Band, Smith Balloons (Same guy who supplies Macy’s), and the Cresent Motorcycle Drill Team from New Jersey. There will also be a concert in the park by the Marine Band, about 30 minutes after the parade (to set-up). Bring your lawn chairs or a blanket, and enjoy the music.

If you would like to help contribute to the American Spirit Parade, print the American Spirit Parade Isaacs Flyer, fill it out, and bring it to the Isaac’s on Centerville Road, as we are doing a fundraiser Tomorrow, March 29th from 5-9pm. The flyer is good for dine-in or take-out. With this flyer, Team American Spirit will get 25% of the total bill.

The TEAM would appreciate your help, and try to attend the Parade… Bring the kids!

VFW WILL DEFEAT BACHMANN PLAN

From our national HQ, the VFW is gearing up to fight a ridiculous proposal from Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) to cut $4.5 billion from the Department of Veterans Affairs:

WASHINGTON, D.C., January 28, 2011 — America’s oldest and largest major combat veterans’ organization announced it will do everything within its power to defeat a plan introduced by Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) to cut $4.5 billion from the Department of Veterans Affairs.

“No way, no how, will we let this proposal get any traction in Congress,” said Richard L. Eubank, the national commander of the 2.1 million-member Veterans of Foreign Wars of the U.S. and its Auxiliaries.

On her website, the three-term congresswoman lists more than $400 billion in suggestions to cut federal spending. The VA suggestion would cap increases to VA healthcare spending, and reduce disability compensation to account for Social Security Disability Insurance payments — in other words, an offset. She says her plan is intended to generate discussion.

“The only discussion the VFW wants is to tell the congresswoman that her plan is totally out of step with America’s commitment to our veterans,” said Eubank, a retired Marine and Vietnam combat veteran from Eugene, Ore.

“There are certain things you do not do when our nation is at war, and at the top of that list is not caring for our wounded and disabled servicemen and women when they return home,” he said. “I want the congresswoman to join us in a tour of the Minneapolis VA Medical Center and Poly Trauma Center the next time she’s in her home district to witness firsthand the great work the VA does every day to heal their wounds and ease their pain. Then I want her to look those disabled veterans in the eye and tell them their service and sacrifice is too expensive for the nation to bear.

“The day this nation can’t afford to take care of her veterans is the day this nation should quit creating them,” said Eubank.

Contact your representative today and let them know we won’t stand for this!

Hickernell to Recognize Area Vietnam Veterans

Rep. Dave Hickernell will host a ceremony in Leffler Chapel at Elizabethtown College in March to honor veterans of the Vietnam War living in the 98th Legislative District.

“Veterans returning from the Vietnam War did not receive the heroes’ welcome given to soldiers returning from previous wars. In many cases, they were disrespected and abused by an angry public,” said Hickernell. “I hope that this event will help make it clear to them that their country has not forgotten them. Their service is appreciated and will be remembered.”

During the ceremony, Hickernell will present each veteran with a specially minted bronze medal and certificate in honor of their service.

Vietnam veterans living in the 98th District, or those who know them, are encouraged to contact Hickernell’s Elizabethtown office at (717) 367-5525 or his Columbia office at (717) 684-5525.

The 98th Legislative District includes Conoy Township, East Donegal Township, West Donegal Township, and part of West Hempfield Township (Farmdale and Ironville) and the boroughs of Columbia, Elizabethtown, Marietta and Mount Joy in Lancaster County, and Londonderry Township and part of the borough of Middletown in Dauphin County.
